Hello Public History!

An Introduction

Greetings, welcome to the first of many posts in this blog.  My name is Scott, and I have been teaching history for the past 18 years.  This year I am taking on the challenge of graduate school.  I am excited to be here.  The program seems wonderful, and I am working with a great group of professors and students.

My Mission

My main goal as a teacher is to try and make the world a better place, both for my individual students and society at large.  I try to give my students the tools they need to improve their lives and have the maximum opportunities to create the best future for themselves.  By helping the student achieve their potential they go forth into the community and make it a better place.  They become examples to the friends and families and show them that improvement is possible.   Their success in turn improves their neighborhoods and by extension, the community improves.  Sometimes I am successful, sometimes I’m not so successful, but I do my best and keep trying to get through to the students.

Final Thoughts

I am excited at the opportunities that this graduate program will provide for me.  The opportunity to use my education experience to  reach more people has an appeal to me.  I have loved going to museums all my life; having the chance to work in a place like that and helping to develop the exhibits and the displays would be an amazing path for my career.   I am looking forward to making the most of this opportunity.

  1. So awesome! As I might have mentioned before, I to am aspiring to teach. Similar to you, I feed off the anticipation that one day as I look out across a classroom I’ll see the light bulb of a student come to life. Ive only done student teaching thus far but theres just something special about being in a class room. For me at least. I really look forward to the day I can say I’m 18 years on the job. I think its an understatement to say that it takes a special kind of person to teach. For that I really commend you,

  2. On my way into high school, I absolutely loathed history as a subject, but the teachers I met during those four years completely changed my perspective. So much so that I myself am pursuing a degree in education! I really agree with you that students have the power to transform their lives and communities, and it is through hard work and dedication that a teacher is able to facilitate that. I hope this program opens the doors in your career that you have been looking for.

  3. It is so great you’re taking on a Masters so help you help others! My interest in this field was encouraged by my history teachers in school. I have always loved the social sciences especially history. I can tell you from a student perspective that this will truly pay it forward even if you never see it. I think it is amazing you have been teaching for so long, I myself am striving to find a way to be able to teach at some point because of my great experiences with my history teachers!

  4. Hey Scott! I really enjoyed reading your post. Great teachers do so much for the world, not only as educators but as mentors for students, especially those kids who might not have anyone else in their life to help shape their character. From our interactions so far, it seems to me that you are an amazing teacher that really cares about his students, so thank you for that! I’m looking forward to working with you in the program and learning from your experience as a seasoned educator. I’ve interned and worked in two different children’s museums in the education departments so I would be interested to hear your thoughts on museum education.
