Marjorie Clair Stinson, younger sister of Katherine Stinson, was born in 1896 at Fort Payne, Alabama. Being motivated by her sister’s success at getting a pilot’s license, Marjorie attended the Wright Brothers school of flying, and in 1914 was issued female U.S. Pilots License No. 9.

Throughout her flying career, Marjorie trained cadets from the Canadian Air Force at Stinson Field, where they gave her the nickname the “Flying Schoolmarm” because of her strict methods of teaching (Note: A schoolmarm in the 1910’s, was slang for a woman teacher, especially one who is regarded as strict or old-fashioned).

Marjorie also worked as a stunt show pilot, performing her flying skills at air shows. After the United States’ involvement in Word War I (1917-1918), the Stinson Flying School in San Antonio closed and Marjorie started working for the U.S. Navy in their Aeronautical Division.

As you learned above, Marjorie Stinson was a skilled pilot and flight instructor. Check out the article below and read about Marjorie’s experience teaching military flight school during World War I:
