Chicanos Por La Causa (Phoenix)

Chicanos Por La Causa (CPLC) is one of the many community development corporations that aims to address issues like education, housing, healthcare, and labor in Phoenix, Arizona. Beginning as a youth-led organization involved with Chicano activism of the 1960s, CPLC gradually developed from an organization with grassroots origins in political activism into a national Latina Development Corporation that uplifts Latino leadership through social and economic means. CPLC is an active nonprofit organization today, advocating for education, health and human services, and housing by responding to the needs of Latino communities in the Southwest by empowering them to become economically and politically self-sufficient.

  • “Sacred Heart” by Camryn Blackmon- This StoryMap explains and examines the role Sacred Heart Parish served in the development and growth of Chicanos Por La Causa in Phoenix, Arizona. Before becoming a national Latino Development Corporation, CPLC started in the Golden Gate Barrio to advocate for the community. The Golden Gate Barrio was primarily Mexican American and lower income on the Southside of Phoenix, where residents call Sacred Heart Parish “the heart” of the community.

During the 1960s and 1970s, CPLC became heavily involved in organizing a series of protests and walkouts to champion better educational opportunities and resources for the Chicano community in Phoenix, Arizona.
