Mexican American Unity Council (San Antonio)

The Mexican American Unity Council (MAUC) is a community development corporation in San Antonio, Texas dedicated to bringing economic and educational services to the city’s Westside. Incorporated in 1967 by a group of Westside activists, these individuals were frustrated with the systemic neglect of the Mexican American barrios. With help from the Ford Foundation, MAUC set out to build up the Westside’s economic independence through direct investment, professional development, and alternative education. MAUC was one of the earliest members of the Southwest Council of La Raza which garnered national recognition, federal assistance, and economic opportunities to be funneled back into their community. Today, MAUC is one of the most influential economic institutions in San Antonio.
