David Ojeda Jr. (2020)

David Ojeda Jr. is the Executive Director of the Community Service Agency (CSA) of South Texas. Ojeda was very active throughout the Chicano Movement, starting with his involvement in political organizing in Carrizo Springs through the Raza Unida Party. Ojeda continued fighting for equal rights of latinos throughout the country as he then moved on to work with immigrant-focused non-profit organizations in Texas and the Midwest. Years of activism and community leadership led him back home to head the CSA of South Texas in the late 1970s.

In this interview, David Ojeda Jr. shares his experience throughout the Chicano Movement, moving from direct activism, into political organizing, then established community development corporations. Ojeda gives insight into how legislation shaped the way latino organizations helped their communities and maintained themselves throughout various political eras. Ojeda shares the history of his current organization, the initial challenges, and current programs. These programs mainly center on housing and social services for the elderly and financial assistance for local entrepreneurs in the counties of Dimmit, LaSalle, Maverick, and Frio.
