Michael A. García (2020)

Michael A. García is a retired architect and graduate of the University of Texas at Austin. After a couple of years working for large architectural firms in San Antonio, Mr. García was recruited by Juan Patlán to help devise housing development plans for the Mexican American Unity Council. 

Interview Summary

In this interview, Michael A. García recounts his experiences working with MAUC during the first years, developing their earliest social and housing programs, and working with the Ford Foundation and local leaders to make it all happen. Mr. García shares fond memories with his MAUC colleagues and witnessing the social and economic transformation of San Antonio’s Westside. Mr. García also shares details on the internal rift between the MAUC executive team that led to the resignation of longtime leader Juan Patlán in 1983.
